The ASHRAE Technology Awards celebrate
outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied
innovative building design, incorporating ASHRAE standards for
effective energy management and indoor air quality (IAQ). Award
recipients must demonstrate proven performance through one year’s
actual, verifiable operating data.
Our
award-winning project, executed in collaboration with the Electrical
and Mechanical Service Department (EMSD) and the Hospital Authority
(HA), involved the installation of four sets of 1700 tons of
refrigeration (TR) capacity Medium Voltage Seawater-cooled VSD Trane CenTraVac® Centrifugal Chillers.
This initiative was part of Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050,
aiming at achieving carbon neutrality through energy-saving and carbon
emission reduction improvements.
The
project, completed in 2023, has significantly reduced the annual
electricity consumption of the chiller plant by 26%, resulting in an
annual saving of approximately 2.8 million kWh of electricity and a
reduction of 1950 tonnes of carbon emissions.
The chillers utilize ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP),
environmentally friendly hydrofluoroolefin
(HFO) refrigerant R1233zd, contributing to global climate change
mitigation.
The
seamless collaboration among EMSD, HA and Trane Hong Kong for the
successful implementation of this project has earned an accolade – the
Honorable Mention in the ASHRAE Technology Award 2025 (Society Level).
This award was presented during the ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter 41st
Anniversary Dinner held at the Grand Ballroom, Crowne Plaza Hong Kong
Kowloon East on June 13, 2025.
